Answers to common questions, and a person to write to.
Write to us
We read every message, and a person answers. If something went wrong, tell us the museum and the piece, and include the version from the bottom of the app's Settings.
At the museum
How does a visit work?
- On Home, tap Start your visit and choose the museum you're in.
- Point your camera at the label beside an artwork, and tap the label or the shutter.
- Take a photo of the artwork if you like, or tap Skip. The piece is saved to your visit either way.
- Tap Generate guide, and the guide starts talking. It carries on with the screen locked. Tap Scan next for the next piece.
When you're done, tap End visit. A visit also ends by itself after two hours with nothing scanned or heard.
Can I scan when I'm not at a museum?
Yes. On Home, tap Scan without a visit, and point at a label or a caption: a print at home, a page in a book, a postcard. The piece is saved to your collection, outside any museum visit.
The label is hard to read. What helps?
- Dim galleries: tap Turn on the light beside the shutter.
- Labels that are high, low or far: the label camera starts zoomed in. Pinch, or tap the zoom over the shutter, to get the label to fill the frame, and hold steady for a moment.
- Several labels in view: tap the one you want, and the guide reads only that one. If there are two in the frame, the app asks which.
- Glare or an odd layout: tap Type the label and type the title and artist yourself.
- A photo you already have: use the library button to choose a photo of a label.
If it read the label wrong, tap the label in the strip at the bottom of the camera to correct the title, artist or date, or tap Scan again. You can fix it later too: in Collection, touch and hold the piece, then Edit label.
How do I ask the guide a question?
On any piece, tap Ask, then say your question or type it. The guide answers out loud, and it knows the piece, the museum you're in, and what you've already heard. To ask about the museum or an artist rather than one piece, open Your visit and tap Ask there. Ask needs a pass.
Do I need earbuds?
They're kinder to the people around you, and the guide is easier to hear. The app reminds you when you start a visit without them; you can turn the reminder off in Settings → Earbuds reminder.
What's free, and the passes
What can I do without a pass?
- Save every visit: each label you scan and your photo, kept in your collection.
- Look at every painting in the Gallery, and hear each one's Overview, Today's piece included.
- Take the tour of every Gallery room.
A pass opens the guide for every piece you scan or search, all its tracks, Ask, and listening again; and in the Gallery, every track after the Overview, and Ask.
What are the Annual, Family and Day Passes?
- Annual Pass: free for 3 days, then $39.99 a year, renewing automatically.
- Family Pass: up to six people through Family Sharing. Free for 3 days, then $59.99 a year, renewing automatically.
- Day Pass: $7.99 once. It ends 24 hours after you buy it and doesn't renew.
Prices are in US dollars; the App Store shows yours. The free days are for new subscribers, once: the Annual and Family Passes share them.
How do the free days and renewal work?
You aren't charged during the 3 free days. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before they end, the pass starts and renews each year on that date, at the price shown. Your pass and when it renews are shown in the app's Settings, under Your pass.
How do I cancel?
Either way works, at any time:
- On your iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, choose Linger Art, and cancel.
- In the app, open Collection, tap Settings in the toolbar, then Manage subscription. (It's shown while you have an Annual or Family Pass you bought.)
On Apple Vision Pro, it's Settings → Manage subscription. Your pass stays active until the end of the time you've paid for, and nothing in your collection is lost.
How do I share the Family Pass?
Buy the Family Pass with Family Sharing set up and purchase sharing on, and up to five others in your family group get it too. They open Linger Art on their own device; their Settings show "Family Pass · shared with you". If it doesn't appear, have them tap Restore purchases in Settings. Only the person who bought it can manage or cancel it.
How are the Day Pass's 24 hours counted?
From the moment you buy it, by the clock: 24 hours later it ends, whether or not you've been listening. Settings shows the time it ends. Buy it when you arrive at the museum.
I bought a pass but the app doesn't show it
Make sure you're signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you bought it with, then open Settings in the app and tap Restore purchases. If that doesn't help, write to us.
How do I get a refund?
Passes are sold by Apple, so refunds are Apple's to give. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves, but we're glad to hear what went wrong.
The guide, your collection, your privacy
Who writes the guide? Is it accurate?
The guide is written with AI, by OpenAI's model, from museum records, Wikipedia and other public sources, and read aloud by a computer voice that runs on your device. It works hard to be right, and it can still get things wrong. The label on the wall, and the museum, have the last word.
What goes to OpenAI, and how do I turn it off?
Nothing goes until you allow it: the first time you ask the guide for something, the app asks first. After that, your searches and questions, the words of the labels you scan, and the photos you take of a piece for the guide go to OpenAI to write what you hear. No name or account is attached.
To turn it off: Collection → Settings → Share with OpenAI (on Apple Vision Pro, Settings → Share with OpenAI). The Gallery, Today's piece and your collection still play. The privacy policy has the details.
Where is my collection kept? Will I lose it with a new phone?
Your collection and your photos are kept on your device. If you're signed in to iCloud, a copy is kept in your own private iCloud, so it comes back on a new iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account, and shows up on your Apple Vision Pro too. Only you can see it. Members can listen again to anything they've heard, even with no signal.
What doesn't it do yet?
- It doesn't recognize a painting from its picture: it starts from the label.
- It speaks English only.
- It isn't on iPad yet.
Is Linger Art connected to the museums?
No. Linger Art is independent and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by any museum, including any named in the app. Artwork images come from open-access museum collections and Wikimedia Commons.
